The midsole is one of the most important parts of the shoe. The part between the sole (outsole) and the upper part of the shoe. The midsole is the main element in the perception of the softness/hardness of the shoe, stability and in the perception of the terrain on which we move. This is the point of contact between the runner's foot and the shoe. Sports brands emphasize the development of the most ideal cushioning of their midsole.
Some sports brands abandoned EVA foam and rushed to use other cushioning materials in the midsole, the Hoka One One brand stayed with EVA foam. They modified the EVA foam according to their own recipe. They created an EVA-rubber blend that is more elastic (for better support/cushioning and energy return) and more durable than traditional EVA.
And what is EVA, you ask? Ethylene vinyl acetate . Soft, light and flexible polymer. One of the cheapest midsole materials, but also one of the least durable.
